InsectSafe
The Pinewood InsectSafe® technology
Nature is where we belong – but some visitors are less welcome. That’s where InsectSafe® comes in. Our supplier has created a technology with insect repellent properties, 100% free from permethrin, that repels mosquitoes, ticks, flies and other insects from the fabric. Unlike many anti-insect technologies found on the market, the Pinewood InsectSafe® technology uses the active repellent substance IR3535®, which makes the insects uncomfortable and reluctant to stay on the garment, rather than killing them.
The active repellent substance IR3535® has during more than 30 years been used in insect repellent sprays and lotions, and only now with new advanced technology, it can finally with durable effect be integrated into textiles. IR3535® is supplied by German Merck KGAA and is inspired by nature itself and naturally occurring amino acids. The technology creates a long lasting and effective atmosphere around the textile fibres which causes most insects to avoid landing on the fabric, an added value to our already high functional garments. If insects do land on the garment, they will, due to discomfort and disorientation, not do anything more than passively just sit around until they choose to fly away again. The repellent used is biocompatible, and proven safe to use for all, including small children and pregnant women. The effectiveness of IR3535® has been confirmed by the recommendations of official bodies such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and WHO (World Health Organization). The technology is also resistant to washes. The garments have been tested up to 80 washes and the technology remains active in the fabric.
According to WHO, about 1 out of 6 people is infected with a disease transmitted by insect bites from mosquitos, ticks, bees, wasps and biting flies, amongst others (vbdfactsheet.pdf (who.int). TBE, or tick-borne encephalitis, plays a major role in the incidence of viral infections within the central nervous system. Each year, about 10,000 to 12,000 cases are officially reported, although the true number of cases is likely much higher (Tick-borne encephalitis (who.int)). Infected ticks are primarily responsible for these infections, which can stay attached to the skin for an extended period.
The Pinewood InsectSafe® technology revolutionizes the way of protecting outdoor clothing against insects. Lightweight, breathable, and built for adventure, our InsectSafe® clothing is designed for warm climates where function matters most. Whether you're deep in the woods or by the water, you can focus on the wild – not what’s buzzing around you. For us, protection from insects isn’t about conquering nature – it’s about being part of it, on your own terms. With InsectSafe® technology, we want to raise the bar for how outdoor garments should perform in real life, so you can keep getting wonderfully lost, without worrying about the little bugs along the way.
Embrace the wild – let nature get close, not the insects.
